Description

Celestial Interactions simulates the gravitational interactions between celestial bodies.

Five types of celestial bodies are here from the start: asteroids, terrestrial planets, gas giants, red dwarves and blue giants. They all have differents aspects, "gravities" and sizes.

Each of these celestial bodies are animated by their gravitational interactions with all the other bodies in the universe. Forces are function of a "gravity" divided by a square distance; masses are excluded from the calculations. The scale of the bodies size has also been reduced for the needs of the simulation: a blue giant would in reality be at least 200 times bigger than a red dwarf!

Despite these limitations, the bodies movements remain in some way representative of the reality, and it's also possible to see stars absorbing other bodies. Collisions between asteroids and planets are not simulated, still I hope to make a much better version in the future which would show those.

This simulation is the result of my first tryouts with ActionScript 2.0

Controls

  • Left-click: triggers the "Big Bang" (only when the universe is empty)
  • Mouse-wheel: zoom in / zoom out (works also with the buttons "+" and "-")
  • Mouse over a celestial body: displays its "gravity"
  • Mouse over an arrow: moves in the arrow direction
